Coconut palm leaf stalk

Coconut tree in Thailand normally grown near the river. This villager is located at Baan Thakha, Samut Songkhram, Thailand. This visits is a part of project by Tourism Authority of Thailand, Thailand Local Tourism Design Award 2017.
Local technique with villager
After been 20 finalist for Thailand Local Tourism Design Award 2017, We have been to the village to find out the material and their technique. As the coconut tree have been grown in this area they normally sell the coconut and make a coconut sugar and mean while they collect and lance coconut leaf to weave for a household used.

In the picture their is only stalk of coconut leaf which they remove all the leaf of by hands. The stalk will be yellow-green for a few days and turn in to light brown. The length can be around 80 centimetres to 1 meters.
“The length is up to the position of leaf from the palm which can be 80 centimetres to 1 meters” said the villagers while she divide the stalk by holding the tip and shake it to collect the long one.



This is an example of weaving basket that the village do. Coconut palm leaf stalk is different texture than bamboo or rattan, It's not too flexible so it's normally weave by crossing and bind together with their technique by rope, or braid it with a bunch of stalk.

Taking a prototype to villager to talk and combine ours technique together.
Production and Showcase
A production for Joyn lamp divide in to two part, first, is a rattan structure which bending in to curve shape and color in black. Then weave with coconut palm leaf stalk inspired by the villager technique.



Showcase
Final product is exhibited at Village festival in Chulalongkorn Centenary Park, Bangkok, Thailand organised by Tourism Authority of Thailand.
